Queensland mum shares $50 Bunnings fridge gap hack
If you have looked at ways to maximise your kitchen space, the solution could very well be right next to your fridge.
While it’s something that often gets overlooked, the gap between your fridge and wall can come in very handy, as one Queensland mum was quick to discover.
Lea Cos was in desperate need of finding space to stock her more than 30 spices, however, with a very tight kitchen, adding more cupboards was out of the question.
“I had them stuffed away in big plastic containers in a hard to reach place in a corner cupboard,” Lea told news.com.au.
She had heard of people making their own racks that fit in the gap between their fridge and cupboard — but as a busy mum, she had no time to create her own.
“I had been aware of this method of storage for a few years but it was too time consuming and labour intensive to do from scratch,” she said.
Instead, she began looking online at Bunnings and noticed it had wooden spice racks.
She headed into to her local hardware store and discovered the racks would fit perfectly after measuring the space between her fridge and cupboard.
She then nabbed two of the Kit Out Timber racks for $50, branding it as the “best solution” to her years-long problem.
“I didn’t have to do anything except get some screws and drill one rack on top of the other,” Lea said.
“It was exactly what I was looking for.
“Added benefit is now the gap doesn’t fill with cobwebs or dust bunnies. It is functional.”
Lea said the racks are visually accessible at a glance too.
“I cook from scratch a lot so have a lot of spices,” she added.
Lea said she is also looking attaching a handle to make pulling it out easier.
The mother-of-one shared her rack hack in a popular Bunnings Facebook group, attracting more than 700 ‘likes’ and comments with many describing it as “incredible” and “brilliant”.
“Omg this is what I need for that gap. I have been looking for month,” one woman wrote.

“I’ve been looking for a rack like this for so long! So glad you shared! I thought I’d have to go back to my year 7 level skills and make one from scratch,” a third person joked.
Lea said she was “blown away” by all the positive feedback and was happy to hear just how many people she inspired who were also looking for a quick storage solution.
